Campbell Soup Company Annual Valuation – 2015 $CPB

Company Profile (obtained from Google Finance): Campbell Soup Company, together with its consolidated subsidiaries, is a manufacturer and marketer of high-quality, branded convenience food products. The Company operates in five segments: U.S. Simple Meals; Global Baking and Snacking; International Simple Meals and Beverages; U.S. Beverages and Bolthouse and Foodservice. In the United States, Canada and Latin America, the Company’s products are resold to consumers in retail food chains, mass discounters, mass merchandisers, club stores, convenience stores, drug stores, dollar stores and other retail, commercial and non-commercial establishments. In the Asia-Pacific region, the Company’s products are generally resold to consumers through retail food chains, convenience stores and other retail, commercial and non-commercial establishments. The Company’s brands include Arnott’s, Bolthouse Farms, Campbell’s, Goldfish, Kjeldsens, Pace, Pepperidge Farm, Plum Organics, Prego, Swanson and V8.

  7. Moderate Price to Assets – PB ratio is less than 2.5 or PB x PEmg is less than 50 - FAIL

Enterprising Investor – must pass at least 4 of the following 5 tests or be suitable for a defensive investor: Score = 2/5

  1. Sufficiently Strong Financial Condition, Part 1 – current ratio greater than 1.5 - FAIL
  2. Sufficiently Strong Financial Condition, Part 2 – Debt to Net Current Assets ratio less than 1.1 - FAIL
  3. Earnings Stability – positive earnings per share for at least 5 years - PASS
  4. Dividend Record – currently pays a dividend - PASS
  5. Earnings growth – EPSmg greater than 5 years ago - FAIL

Conclusion:

Campbell Soup Company is not suitable for either the Defensive Investor or the Enterprising Investor.  The Defensive Investor is concerned with the low current ratio, insufficient earnings growth over the last ten years, and the high PEmg and PB ratios.  The Enterprising Investor is concerned with the level of debt relative to the current assets along with the lack of earnings growth over the last five years.  As a result, value investors following the ModernGraham approach based on Benjamin Graham’s methods should explore other opportunities.  As for a valuation, the company appears to be overvalued after seeing its EPSmg (normalized earnings) drop from $2.41 in 2011 to an estimated $2.27 for 2015.  This level of growth does not support the market’s implied estimate of 6.06% growth, leading the ModernGraham valuation model, based on Benjamin Graham’s formula, to return an estimate of intrinsic value well below the price.
